Or maybe it's true in general, but I hear a lot from people who think they want to know (in particular because they think maybe they want to learn first-hand)? In any case, I'm OK with destroying a little bit of the magic and mystery of restaurants because I think it's important for customers to remember that there's actual human beings behind the scenes making their food, if only because maybe that'll inspire more people to be kinder to the servers caught in the cross-fire of that particular exchange... seriously, servers do not get nearly enough love or credit!

Re: Twitter Tuesday: #kitchenpetpeeves

This is all back of the house stuff! I highly recommend going for The Perfect Scoop, a great book by David Lebovitz (former Chez Panisse pastry chef). I've been doing just the sorbets for about the past month, and every one has been amazing.

Re: Wordless Wednesday: Turducken edition (may not be not safe for veg*ns).

Thanks Jeanie!
Yes. That.

In reference to the article; I love to cook. I don't mind spending hours in the kitchen. What I do mind is spending hours in the kitchen with a whining toddler attached to my leg.

Some days my son is perfectly fine with sitting in his high chair playing with bananas for 45 minutes while I make dinner. Some days he climbs onto the table, gets into the butter dish, and smears butter all over the dining room carpet. On days like the latter I choose a McDouble with big mac sauce.

Re: Monkey Monday: “Is this thing on?”

Another big complaint we had about that article is the notion that the time spent watching TV can be easily converted to cooking time. If you have to work late, and are coming home at 7 or 8 p.m., because you're working long hours to make ends meet or to keep your employer from laying you off, it might be time to eat the moment you walk in the door, especially if you have children. That TV-watching time from 8 to 11 p.m. isn't going to work as food-preparation time.

Re: Monkey Monday: “Is this thing on?”

Sarah and I had a similar reaction to the NYT article. I really was annoyed by the statement that "The core problem is that cooking is defined as work". How on earth is cooking not work? I mean, it's enjoyable to a lot of people, including myself, but it still requires energy and effort. If you have a job where you have to stand all day, then it's sometimes very unappealing to stand for another hour in the kitchen.

Re: Foto Friday: Delicious things eaten during recent travels.

Yay! That meal was SO GOOD.

Re: Foto Friday: Delicious things eaten during recent travels.

This one? http://www.flickr.com/photos/p...

Re: Foto Friday: Delicious things eaten during recent travels.

Also, comments have the weirds. Whoops!

Re: Foto Friday: Delicious things eaten during recent travels.

Thanks Peter! Fixing it now. Also reminding you that I would totally like to post pictures of me making my "OMG NOM YES" face if you ever get those up and linkable on the intertweetplusflickrfaces....

Re: Foto Friday: Delicious things eaten during recent travels.

Also: we really do eat pretty well! :)

Re: Foto Friday: Delicious things eaten during recent travels.

Thanks Peter!
